Help for Java applet users
Read this page if you do not know how to
use the Java applet, or want help with it. If you cant access the Java
Applet at all the click here: http://irc.chat.org.uk/cgi-bin/irc.cgi
to use IRC:CGI a powerful non-java client.
Connecting
Click on the #channel/chatroom to go to
the webpage with the applet. A new window appears, with
the title Connect. Enter your Nickname (screen name)
Chatting
After a few seconds, you will be
connected to Chat.org.uk. To start chatting, type your text in the box
at the bottom of the applet, and press Enter to send your text to the
room. The 4 buttons to the bottom-right allow you to choose different
ways your messages are sent.
The button on the left is the one selected when you first chat and is
to talk to the whole room, the second one (selected in the
image below) is for a private message (PM, or whisper), the
third one is to think something and the fourth one is for an action.

Messaging
To whisper to someone, first find their
name on the chatter list on the right. Click on their name (with the
left mouse button). Then, click the whisper icon - 2nd from the left
at the bottom-right of the applet (you can see it pressed down in the
image below). It's a speech bubble with dashed edges (pressed down in
our example in the image below). Now type your message, and press
enter.

Ignoring a user
If someone is annoying you rather than wanting to have them kicked
just ignore them. Its incredibly simple and you will not get any more
messages from that user simple right click on the users screen-name
and click "ignore".

Registering your screen-name
If you want to register your screen name
(nick) so that other people cannot use it you must use either use the
advanced Java Applet or the CGI:IRC Interface

Then type the following command:
/msg
NickServ register yourpassword
your@emailaddress
Replace your password
with your password
The name you are currently using will be registered with that
password. In future you will need to identify yourself to nickserv
See what NickServ says in reply, it should either say something
like "your password is yourpassword, remember this for future
use" or it might say you did not use the command correctly.- in
which case try again!
Once you own a name, you MUST identify to NickServ as soon as you
connect:
/msg nickserv identify yourpassword
