How do I ignore a user or find out more info about them?
If you click on a chatter's name (on the chatters list on the right), with the
RIGHT-hand mouse button, you get a menu. You can do the following things:-
- Get their identity - this shows what internet connection they are using,
for example ras-c5800-1-48-230.dialup.wisc.edu
is someone using an internet connection provided by the University of
Wiscosin-Madison. If someone mis-behaves in chat, you can get their user
info and report them to their Internet Provider, who may be able to take
action. If you report someone to us, we really do need this information in
order to take action.
- Ignore them! If they say things you don't like, simply ignore the
offending user.
- Get their version. They may be using the Java Applet (CentralChat Chat
1.0), the superb mIRC
by the British programmer Khaled Mardam-Bey, CGI
or any other IRC client. If they are using a program like mIRC,
they can do a lot more and see a lot more of what goes on behind the scenes
compared to Java users.
- Get their lag time. This is the time for your messages to reach the CC
server, then go from the CC server to their computer. A typical lag time is
somewhere in between 1 second (very fast) and 7 seconds (very slow). If you
and someone else type a message at the exact same point in time, it looks to
you as though yours was first, but it looks to them as though they said
theirs first!
- Get their local time. This is the time their computer is set to. It also
says the date and time zone. A typical local time response might be
"Wed Jul 26 14:37:23 PDT 2000". This means that person's computer
is set to the date Wednesday 26 July 2000, and the time 14:37 and 23
seconds, in the time zone PDT.
The response will depend on what client they're using. Their PC could use
either the 24 hour clock or AM and PM.
