What is IRC and Chat servers?
IRC (Internet Relay Chat) provides a way of communicating with people from all over the world in real time using the internet. The obvious advantage when talking to people is you are not paying for international telephone call charges, however the system offers much more than that.
IRC is made up of a series of "worlds" or networks, Chat.org.uk is just one of them, basically the chat.org.uk Network or "net" allows you to talk to other users connected to the same network. The network is broken up into "channels" sometimes referred to as "rooms", as you can imagine with hundreds or thousands of people connected at one time it can be hard to find someone who shares similar interests. Rooms make this easier to happen.
You can use a number of different pieces of software, including your web browser to connect to one of the worlds or networks.
