System Design
Chat.org.uk uses a client server design*.  Not only are there 3 main chats to choose from (and dozens more besides), but there are many "clients" that can be used to hook into it, and enable you to chat.

* Explanation:
(Client Server Architecture) This is much like your email from your ISP, whilst the email resides on a server you can use many "clients" to access it. For example: Outlook Express, Eudora or Netscape Mail, possibly even a web based "client" similar to Hotmail, all these different clients offer similar functionality. They allow you to read and send emails, but they may have different features and user interfaces, some will be better suited to some tasks than others.

System Basics
The server we run is based on IRC standards (irc.chat.org.uk:6667). Like http, www, pop3 and IMAP," IRC" is a standard protocol (short for Internet Relay Chat) that enables users on any system, anywhere in the world to communicate with others in real time as long as they are connected to the net.

Available Clients
We offer 3 ways to acces chatrooms via your web browser a simple Java interface, and Advanced Java interface and an IRC client for those behind firewalls or who have problems with Java. More advanced users often like to use special chat programs that run on your computer we have also listed the best of these in the download section. We have our own unique client MaxxIM.
